Leona

This song started out as a poem, which I wrote in the jungles of San Luis Potosí in Mexico, on a trip to visit the surrealist sculpture gardens of Edward James – las pozas. It was 2021 and I was in Mexico to collect my possessions, having decided during the pandemic to return to the UK and to train to be a teacher. The song is inspired by a poem by the great Argentine poet Alfonsina Storni, called ‘así’ in which she lists all the different, contrasting versions of herself and how difficult it is to remember other ways of being and feeling, when you are deep in one state. I was afraid that in my year of teacher-training I would lose touch with the creative, brave, adventurous, Leo part of myself – leona. This song is an attempt to stay connected with that part of myself, not to forget or lose touch with it, during that period of hard work and study.
