About Album
Roots in Motion is a deeply personal musical journey by ud player and composer Mehmet Polat, exploring identity, culture, and artistic evolution. Blending traditional influences with contemporary jazz and world music, the album reflects the balance between staying connected to one’s roots while embracing change and new experiences. Featuring Polat’s Quartet—Franz von Chossy (piano), Daniel van Huffelen (double bass), and Martin Hafizi (drums)—alongside guest musicians Vera van der Bie (violin) and Qusai Naim (cello), the album weaves intricate rhythms and expressive melodies. Each of the 12 compositions tells a story, from the resilience of The Pistachio Tree to the reflective Repose and the blues-infused Urfa Blues. Polat’s masterful compositions draw from diverse traditions, including Turkish makams, flamenco, Indian ragas, and jazz, creating a rich and immersive listening experience. Through rhythmic complexity and heartfelt storytelling, Roots in Motion invites listeners into a world of movement, adaptation, and deep musical connection.
